I’m Hanna- Founder of the Laika Family and most importantly…Winnie’s mum!

At Laika Family, I’m dedicated to making life safer and more connected for pets and their people. Founded by me, Hanna, an all round helicopter pet parent!
We exist to support owners with the information, reassurance, and community they need, every day and especially when it matters most. Pets are family to me, and they deserve to be seen, protected, and prioritised, never an afterthought.

Laika Family is inspired by real pet families, real emergencies, and the gap so many of us feel between loving our pets deeply and having the right support to keep them safe. My focus is creating a kinder, more joined up world for pet parents, one where we feel less alone, more informed, and connected to others who care just as much. As we grow, Laika Family is bringing together safety and community in a single experience that supports pets at home, outdoors, and everywhere in between.

The Story of Laika, the heroic Space Dog

Our pets are our family, it’s a well known fact. They love us, they are loyal, fierce and would quite literally, man’s best friend. And that’s exactly what Laika was. Laika was a small little mongrel who grew up on the gruelling streets of Moscow. She endured the cold weather and the harsh treatment of people. But one thing about Laika was that she was loving and loyal, she didn’t care what anyone did to her, she would never retaliate and she loved people until the very end. Laika was plucked off of the streets of Moscow, chosen for her unwavering spirit and warm tendencies. She was put through a month of hardship, training to be one of the first dogs in space. Scientists would train her to stay in small spaces for long periods of time, decreasing the size of her surroundings until she learnt to not go to the bathroom or even move. On the 3rd November 1957, Laika was sent into space with puppy pads and enough food and water to last her a few weeks. She was sent on a mission to test out a space-crafts ability to re-enter space, but everyone knew she wouldn’t make it back alive, and unfortunately she didn’t. Her love of humans was her ultimate demise, she died isolated, afraid and alone. I don’t want that for any other animal. I named this Laika to honour her spirit and her grace. I hope that this honours her.
